PokerStars Poker: Advantages and Disadvantages

Having established themselves as such a household name in the online poker industry, there are plenty of different aspects which makes PokerStars such a great place to play. However, just like any other site there are always things that can be improved. Here are some of the things we loved while carrying out our PokerStars review, and some things that we would like to see improved.

  • Huge range of cash games with blinds starting as low as $0.01.
  • Best tournaments around including round the clock, and sit and go's.
  • Fun themed games such as ‘All in shootouts’, ‘Spin & Go’ and ‘Fifty50’
  • First site to introduce 'Zoom' games
  • Also offer a fully operational sportsbook and PokerStars casino games

PokerStars is Perfect for…

  • Those that want to play a huge range of different tournaments and tournament types.

  • Those that have the ability to play multiple cash games at one time.

  • Those that want to experiment with different poker games and themes that are far removed from traditional poker formats.

  • Those that want a complete gambling experience. They can play poker, bet within the traditional and live casino as well as bet on all their favourite sports.

PokerStars Cash Games and Player Traffic

A huge part of any online poker site are the different cash games that can be offered. PokerStars gives you the ability to play up to four cash games at one time and the different blind limits cater to every type of wallet size.

  • Blind limits can start out as low as $0.01 and range up to $400.
  • Brilliant amount of variety with formats such as Texas Hold’em, Omaha and Stud
  • You can play more than one cash game at any time.
  • Choice of tables sizes available
  • You can play with (up to 9) of your friends in your very own table games.

Cash games: an in-depth look

With so many different cash games at your disposal, let’s take a look at what each game can offer.

Texas Hold’em

Texas Hold’em is the most popular poker game on PokerStars and sees thousands of players flocking to their cash games on a daily basis. Both new and existing members can play no limit or limit games on a range of different table sizes.

For those that like to have the option of winning big, and winning quickly, no limit games are the way to go. Given the ability to bet with your entire stack in each and every hand, the action on no-limit games can often be fast and furious.

Limit games are ideal for players that like to take their time and aren’t willing to participate in the mad thrills and spills that no-limit games provide. Bets can only be made at the limit of the blinds. Therefore if the table limit has a $1 and $2 blind, the maximum that can be bet is $2.

The options to play limit games aren’t as widespread as no-limit games but you should still easily be able to find a game to your liking.

Tempest Hold’em

A new type of Hold’em awaits at PokerStars and that is Tempest Hold’em. Exclusive to PokerStars, the game is fast and furious.

To begin with, each hand will start with a player posting an ante. However the value of the antes will range depending on whether the previous hands reached the final stage of the hand or not. If the hand reached a final showdown, the ante for the next hand will start at the lowest limit that the table allows, if the previous hand was settled before the final showdown, the ante will be higher.

What’s more is that rather than two blinds - the big and small, there is also a third blind - the giant blind. Hands don’t develop like traditional no limit or limit hands, instead, players are given the option to go all-in or fold. Any players that go all-in will see the action through until the final showdown.

Tip: It’s important to note that the most that can be won or lost on any hand is worth ten times the Giant blind amount.

6+ Hold’em

Another game exclusive to PokerStars is 6+ Hold’em. A unique game that sees any card below the value of 6 removed from the deck, 6+ Hold’em sees big hitting hands hit often and frequently.

By virtue of having all cards lower than a six removed, there are only 36 cards left in the deck and because of this, there is only one blind posted. Known as a ‘button blind’ the player posting the blind will also have the dealer button.

From this point, the game is played in a similar fashion to regular Texas Hold’em with bets being able to be placed on the turn, flop and river. There are also no limits to what can be bet.

Showtime Hold’em

For those looking for added clues, Showtime Hold’em provides a nice alternative to the classic Texas Hold’em games that so many of us are used to playing.

The format matches traditional Texas Hold’em with the exception being that all folded cards (including those before the flop) are revealed. This means that throughout a hand, players will be able to get vital clues and work out what cards are no longer in the deck.

It is a great format for beginners and those who like to work out probabilities.

Swap Hold’em

Swap Hold’em provides another small twist on the Hold’em games that we have come to know and love. Following exactly the same rules as traditional Hold’em, the wrinkle is that at any point up until the river card a player has the opportunity to swap out one of their two hole cards that they were dealt at the very start of the hand.

The swap can only be made once and doesn’t cost the player any chips or money to do so.

Split Hold’em

The final Hold’em variety is Split Hold’em. This game variety follows Texas Hold’em conventions but will see two boards produced. That means there will be two flops, two turns and two rivers.

With two chances to win, the winner of each board will receive half the funds in the total pot.

Zoom

Zoom Poker is a fast and furious game that was originally devised by PokerStars but has since been adopted by other sites. Whereas in traditional poker you will be sat at the same table, Zoom will see you transported to a new table as soon as a hand is settled or you have folded. With hardly any waiting time, if you like quick and fast action, you will love Zoom.

Omaha High

Alongside Texas Hold’em, Omaha High is a hugely popular game. Omaha differs from Texas Hold’em with each player receiving four cards rather than just the two that Texas Hold’em players receive.

The hand will play out in a similar fashion to Hold’em games but another major difference is that the finishing hand must contain exactly two cards from the initial four cards that a player was dealt as well as three cards from the board. Omaha games can take the form of both limit and no limit varieties.

5 and 6 card Omaha

Five card Omaha follows the lead of traditional Omaha games but will see an additional fifth card dealt to a player at the start of a hand.

Six card Omaha

Six card Omaha will see a player start each hand with six hole cards. In both five and six card games, with the exception of the amount of cards that each player starts with, the hand will develop in the same way a standard game of Omaha would.

Stud

As well as Hold’em and Omaha games you can also play Stud games. Before the rise of Hold’em, Stud was by far the most popular poker game that was played. Seven card Stud and Hi/Lo Seven card Stud can be played and accessed via the navigation at the top of the lobby.

Pokerstar Tournaments

One of the ways that PokerStars has developed such a fine reputation is due to the different amount of tournaments that they offer. Here is what you need to know:

  • Huge amount of tournaments on offer across many different formats
  • Weekly and monthly tournaments can offer life changing prize amounts
  • Free tournaments or satellite events allow access into huge tournaments.
  • Tournaments can be played throughout the day at any time
  • Play tournaments that suit you. Determine table size, limits and the type of game you wish to play.

Tournaments: An In-Depth Look

Let’s take a look at some of the PokerStars tournaments that can take place across both Texas Hold’em and Omaha formats.

Sit & Go’s

Sit & Go’s are incredibly popular tournaments which take place all across the week. Often based on limited tables, Sit & Go tournaments can see as few as six players compete for all the marbles or they can be stretched out to a few hundred.

Big prizes can be won across all Sit & Go’s and a whole range of wallet sizes are accommodated.

Fifty50 tournaments

Fifty50 tournaments are all about survival. This is one of the rarer formats where it isn’t about the winner taking it all. Usually reserved for special six man tables, the final three will simply double their money, there is no overall winner crowned.

Deep Stack tournaments

Deep Stack tournaments are designed for those that love to grind and take their time. Whereas starting chip counts for the majority of PokerStars tournaments start at $1,500, Deep Stack tournaments will see players start at $10,000. Yes, these tournaments can go long, but they are usually well worth the wait.

Spin&Go tournaments

Spin&Go tournaments are unique to PokerStars. Reserved for six man tables, you buy in for a certain amount and a prize fund will be spun and generated by the random wheel. In some cases huge prizes can be up for grabs. The winner will take it all.

Rebuy tournaments

Normally in tournaments you only get one life, but that isn’t the case with Rebuy tournaments. For a set limit of time, if you get knocked out you can re enter your tournament stake and buy back into the tournament.

There is no limit on the amount of times you can Rebuy, but the overall aim is to avoid rebuys and build your stake as you would in a normal tournament. Rebuys suit those with larger wallets.

Daily scheduled events

Throughout the week there are daily scheduled tournaments. These tournaments will be fixed to certain times and can take the form of deep stack or Rebuy events.

These specialised daily events can host thousands of players and can see massive amounts won. The buy-ins for these tournaments can differ dramatically.

Satellite events

If you want to win thousands it can often require a hefty buy-in. Satellite tournaments are the perfect way to win your way in for a fraction of the cost. Your prize isn’t often cash but is instead a ticket to the big tournament.

Sunday Million

The showcase event that PokerStars members want to desperately win is the Sunday Million. Worth one million dollars, there are numerous Satellites that take place throughout the week to land a berth at one of the tables and the overall winner of the Sunday Million will net a cool $150,000.

PokerStars Live Events.

PokerStars host the official European Poker Tour and host tournaments all over Europe. This includes stops in Paris, Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Cyprus. As well as the European Poker Tour they also host events on the Asian Poker Tour, Latin America Poker Tour and the North America Poker Tour.

If you are a fan of live Poker you can be assured that there will be a tournament hosted somewhere near you.

PokerStars Web Experience

The PokerStars website has largely stayed the same for the last few years and used to be dominated by a large red and gold interface - that has now changed and you can choose either a lite or dark lobby theme. A true state of the art lobby, PokerStars easily allows you to find your perfect cash game or tournament with ease.

Once you have logged in, you will see all of the different game options at the top of the page and you can easily choose the type of poker you wish to play - Hold’em, Stud or Omaha. When you click on these options you will see the full list of cash games within that relevant section. This initial list might be fairly intimidating, to help narrow down the selection you can choose tables by size, average pot and, of course, blind limit.

If you fancy playing a tournament that is also incredibly easy to do.

Located alongside each game type are ‘Tourney’ and ‘Sit & Go’ buttons. When you open up either option you will be able to see all the relevant tournaments within each category and will be able to filter by entry fee, the amount of players, the type of tournament and time.

Should you wish to play the faster ‘Zoom’ poker offering you can do so as there is a nice clear link to the Zoom rooms at the top of the navigation.

You can also toggle effortlessly between the PokerStars casino and sportsbook and can also access customer service tools, the cashier or look at any responsible gambling tools.

PokerStars Mobile Poker Site & App

Having been around through many different phases of mobile technology, PokerStars has had to adapt its mobile offering significantly. When playing on mobile, users are left with a brilliant experience where all of their favourite poker games can be instantly found in just the click of a few buttons.

Each poker room within the PokerStars lobby has been adapted and optimised for mobile and contains state of the art graphics and gameplay features.

The PokerStars app has achieved a 4.5* rating within the App Store and whilst it would be great for that rating to be higher, you have to take into effect how long the app has been available for. Considering its longevity, that rating can be viewed as solid.

For Android users the app can be easily and simply downloaded from the Google Play Store.

PokerStars Software & Desktop Client

For those wanting to play PokerStars via their desktop, downloading PokerStars onto your desktop is simple and easy. Visit the official PokerStars website and you will be given the chance to download the software.

Once downloaded it should open up automatically. From here the download should begin and depending on the make of your computer/ laptop should only take a few minutes to complete. Before the download can be completed you will need to ensure that you verify all of the terms and conditions. Once you have done that, the download should be completed and you will be able to play.

The completed software download should be able to be accessed via the desktop or can be found within your download folder. The software that is used to power the entire PokerStars experience is their own. Regular updates are often run to ensure the playing experience remains the best in class.

PokerStars Third-Party Software Support

As the world of online poker has evolved, so have the different tools that can benefit an online poker player. There has been a raft of third-party software tools that have been developed that can help you determine the strength of your hand, see past hand history, view statistics or even make decisions for you based on different scenarios that can be set up.

Over at PokerStars they support the development of these tools and there are several that can be used to support either your cash game or tournament play.

A full range of permitted tools can be found here - Prohibited Programs, Tools and Services (PokerStars.uk)

There are also a string of software tools that won’t be permitted, here is a list - Prohibited Programs, Tools and Services (PokerStars.uk)

PokerStars Online Reviews

Being a Review Detective

When considering online player reviews, you often have to take any customer reviews with a pinch of salt. Reviews can often be left by angry players who have lost money and accuse the site of being rigged. We know that through the licensing of the site and the integrity department, this is impossible. So all of these negative types of reviews should be largely ignored.

When looking at what customers are saying, many praise PokerStars for being an excellent site for beginners. It’s easy to see why this is a positive area, the micro blind limits of $0.01 and $0.02 allow for the game to be learnt in a really cost effective manner.
