Bestgamblingsites.com sits down with EPL legend Didi Hamann to get his reaction to last night's semi final showdown between Real Madrid and Manchester City, his thoughts on current transfer rumours alongside his disappointment with Bayern Munich this season.

Real Madrid vs Manchester City Reaction

Best Gambling Sites: What did you make of the 1-1 between Real Madrid and Manchester City?

Didi Hamann: It was a brilliant game of football. Man City were dominating the game for the first 20-25 minutes, but then Madrid got into it and looked the more dangerous side. I wouldn't say that they surprised me, because they showed last season they've got the quality, they do come back and when you think they are on the ropes they always find a way back into the game. This season they have a better side than last year. Rudiger was excellent, he kept Haaland very quiet and Vincius Jr. is just a star in the making. He performed so well against Kyle Walker, one of the quickest players and probably one of the best defenders out there. They put on a tremendous spectacle and I agree with Ancelotti - in the end, Madrid were probably a bit hard done by not to win the game.

BGS: You felt Real Madrid slightly edged it on the night?

DH: I do. When City scored that was probably the best phase Madrid had. They had a couple of opportunities to go two-nil up and that would have been a different story. But then City scored a brilliant goal, a great strike from De Bruyne, to make it one-all. After that, both teams were possibly happy with the result because it gives them a chance in the second leg to go to the final. But if it was a boxing match, I'd say Madrid won on points

BGS: Who do you now see as the favourite to reach the final?

DH: City are very strong at home so it’ll be tough for Madrid to go there and win – not too many teams have done that in the last couple of seasons. But then again, this Madrid team is very good and you see the bench. They’ve got Nacho, they've got Tchouameni who hasn’t really been fully on fire after the World Cup but he's a brilliant player. So they've got players who can make a difference. City need the points from their League game this weekend whereas for Madrid their race is done in the league. I wouldn't rule them out but I'd make City favourites with that result - but you can’t rule Real Madrid out.

BGS: Tactically, do you expect changes in the game next week? In particular, what do you think they might do differently?

DH: We know how dominant City are and as we saw against Bayern Munich, they really kept them penned in for the first half hour. They beat Leipzig 7-0 and they haven't conceded many goals in the competition - just five now in 11 games. I think they will start the game as they did yesterday and try to force the first goal in the first 20-30 minutes. Then when the space opens up then we know it plays to their strengths because then they can use Haaland’s pace, which he couldn't really do yesterday. So I expect City to bomb on and for Madrid to ride the wave in the first 20 minutes, try not to concede and then once the game settles down I think we’ll see Madrid getting into the game, a bit similar to yesterday's game. But obviously the first goal will have a huge impact on the game next week.

Guardiola needs to win the Champions League with Manchester City to cement his legacy

BGS: How important do you think winning the Champions League is to Guardiola's legacy? He hasn't won it since 2011, and has only won it with Barcelona. Last night in the opposition dugout was Ancelotti, a man who's won it twice with two different clubs.

DH: I think it's very important. City had won the league, the FA cup and the League cup before Guardiola joined. The Champions League pursuit was a key reason he came to the club. He's been there since 2016 and he hasn't done it yet. This is the one they all want to win. They have spent an awful lot of money to get to this level and have only reached one final. If you look at Ancelotti, if you look at Mourinho, if you look at Klopp… you know these guys have done things other managers haven't done. Klopp coming to Liverpool and winning the league after 30 years. Mourinho, what he's done in Porto and then winning the Champions League with Inter Milan. Also Ancelotti, what he's done at AC Milan, and what he's done at Madrid now. Guardiola hasn't really done anything which other managers haven't. When he joined Barcelona Rijkaard had just won the Champions League and when he left, Luis Enrique won it in his first season. So, I think it'll be very important for him to win the Champions League with another team because with Barcelona other managers have done it as well.

BGS: Last night was pitched by many as Haaland versus Vinicius. Is that how you saw it? And do you think those two are the key for next week’s second leg? Or are there other players you think could prove more important?

DH: Usually these games are won in midfield and yesterday I felt that Madrid slightly edged it with Kroos, Modric, and Valverde. I think they were excellent and I know Kroos and Modric are getting on a little bit but the way they take care of the ball, it's just sublime. It's lovely to watch for somebody like me who appreciates possession of the ball. And I think it was a great lesson for kids as well – to highlight the areas where you can take risks, and areas where you can’t, or you shouldn't. But the way they took care of the ball was excellent. There will be a similar story next week, you've got to control the midfield and if you don't give De Bruyne or the wings of Manchester City too many opportunities, and Haaland doesn't get any service, it’s very hard for them to score and I think that was the case last night.

BGS: Kevin De Bruyne scored an incredible goal. Did he show his status in this Man City side? With so much limelight on Haaland, did Kevin De Bruyne show that he could still be the main man for City?

DH: Yeah, he has been for a number of years. He was pretty quiet, as most of the forward players for Manchester City were yesterday, but if you give him one chance, you give him a free hit from 20 yards he can put the ball in the back of the net. We've seen it week in, week out for the last five or six seasons and he did it again yesterday. I don't think it was any surprise to anyone.

BGS: Some people were surprised there were no substitutes for Man City last night, Madrid made three. What did you make of him leaving the same team on for the full 90 minutes?

DH: He’s done it before and you’ve got to respect his feeling as the manager. Maybe if they had conceded the second goal it would have been a different story. But he's got faith and confidence in his team, and they scored their goal at the right time. At the time when the goal did go in, you might have thought about maybe bringing somebody on to change the game because Madrid were well on top. But then they scored the goal and it was a different game again. He's done it before so I don't think it was too big a surprise that he didn’t make any changes.

Manchester City vs Everton preview

BGS: Just back to domestic issues for Man City - they have got a big game and they need the points when they go to Everton who are on the back of a 5-1 win at Brighton. What do you expect from the game? And how many changes do you expect Pep to make given how finely balanced the Champions League tie is?

DH: They can afford, theoretically, to lose the game, or even draw two games from the five remaining. I do expect changes because you need a fresh team on Wednesday and it was a hard game last night. We all know Goodison is a tough place to go, especially now after that emphatic win away to Brighton. But I think he'll make at least four or five changes. I'd be very surprised if he didn’t. You don't want to lose anyone to injury, you need a fresh team. He will give a few players a runout because he might need them to come on. He has played pretty much the same team for the last 8-10 weeks when he has had these guys available. I think you've got to give the other players playing time as well so that they don't fall too far behind.

BGS: What do you predict for this trip to Everton and do you think the title race is over or is there still life for Arsenal?

DH: Well, if they don't win away to Everton, and if they do make changes, I think it'll be a tough game. I can see Everton getting something out of it. What they did against Brighton was brilliant on Monday. We know Goodison Park will be bouncing, it's a very hostile atmosphere and it will be on Saturday. I don't think Manchester City will win away to Everton on Saturday, and if they don’t, then I think we have a title race again, because if they do draw and Arsenal win, then it's only one defeat stopping Arsenal from potentially winning the title. I don't expect Arsenal to win the title in the end, but I certainly think it’s possible we've got a much closer title race again from Sunday night.

BGS: So, you think the Manchester City v Everton game could well be a draw?

DH: Yes, I think Everton will get something out of the game, which will be enough to make it a one game swing. Arsenal will be ahead with one more game played, if they do win at home to Brighton.

I think if you go to Newcastle now, you know something is building, something is growing up there. Liverpool on the other hand, are having a bad season for their very high standards. Hopefully they get back into the Champions League. They've got a chance of doing it again now, which didn't look likely a few weeks ago. If they don't get in the Champions League, you need to see where they go, who they bring in. Because if they miss out this season, there's no guarantee they're going to get in the Champions League next season.

Liverpool or Newcastle: Gravenberch transfer rumours

BGS: Bayern Munich’s Gravenberch, has been linked with both Liverpool and Newcastle in the press this week for a fee, estimated around 50 million euros. Is that a transfer you see happening? How do you rate him? Has he been given enough opportunities by Bayern this season?

DH: Gravenberch hasn't been given enough of an opportunity, in reality he has hardly featured. He played last week, and when he has played, he’s played okay. He missed out on the World Cup because of a lack of game time before the tournament. So far, it's been a very disappointing stint in Munich for him. I think he's a very talented player, he’s good on the ball, I think he can nick a goal, even though in Eindhoven he didn't score too many goals. But he’s a very gifted player. I would say his best position is the number 8 and I can see Newcastle and Liverpool being interested. I think if they do offer a certain amount of money Bayern Munich might not be too keen to keep him because, as I said, so far he hasn't played too many games and started very few games. I think there's every chance if they want the player.

BGS: With Liverpool or Newcastle Do you feel there's a club that makes a more sense a better destination for him as a player?

DH: He's probably got less competition in midfield at Liverpool. You need to see who they bring in but I think Liverpool probably need two to three midfield players in the summer. If Newcastle keep all their players, the player who is probably playing this position is Joelinton who has been excellent too – someone who I said a few months ago might be a perfect player for Liverpool. For now the competition at Liverpool is probably less than it is at Newcastle. The way Newcastle is heading at the moment, it won't be easy to get into that team. That might be easier in Liverpool. But, as a player, I always felt more competition is better because the better the players, the more chance it gives you to win games and win trophies. It depends what he wants to do. I think Liverpool are more in need of such a player and midfield players in general than Newcastle are.

BGS: What's a more attractive destination for top European players at the moment do you think - Liverpool or Newcastle?

DH: They are both brilliant clubs, and I was lucky enough to play for both. When you look at the history, then you've got to say that Liverpool has been a lot more successful in recent years. However, I wouldn't like to compare, you need to see what you want to do, you need to have a look at the team, you need to speak to the manager, what his plans are with you. And then you've got to make a decision and I've got no doubt that big things will happen in Newcastle because of the way they've been playing. I've been watching them a lot lately and they're brilliant to watch. They seem to have a real team spirit, which is not always the case when a new owner comes in with a lot of money. But they have spent the money very wisely and I think Eddie Howe has done a brilliant job. You see the fans, I know how passionate the people out there are.

Liverpool Transfer rumours: Zieler, Kelleher & MacAllister

BGS: Liverpool are also rumoured about bringing a new number two goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler the German International, who fans here will remember from his time at Leicester. What do you make of that potential move with him coming in as a number two with Kelleher expected to move in the summer?

DH: Zieler is playing for Hannover and he’s a good goalkeeper. Whether he fits the bill for a number two remains to be seen because I think Liverpool were very, very lucky and fortunate to have a number two like Kelleher who I rate as a brilliant goalkeeper. I've got no doubt he'll be a very good number one for a good club next season. If Liverpool rate Zieler high enough to be their number two, then I can see that happening. Alisson Becker is hardly injured, so I think the opportunities for the number two at Liverpool in the last three or four years were very limited.

BGS: Kelleher has been quite heavily linked with Spurs, a rumoured 20 million pound fee. Do you think he's at the level to be a Premier League number one goalkeeper elsewhere?

DH: Yeah, I think he is. In Ireland they’ve got two excellent goalkeepers in Bazunu and him. Bazunu is probably going to get relegated now. It's different being number two or number one because the spotlight is on you if you’re the number one. You must not make any mistakes, especially at a club like Spurs because the expectation is to finish in the top five or six. But I really think he's got the ability and the character, he's a very calm keeper, whenever he's played he's been excellent. I'd like to see him in the Premier League and I wouldn't worry about him, even if it's a club like Spurs which is expected to finish in the top five or top six. I think he's good enough to do that.

BGS: Alexis MacAllister… so much has been written about him, a World Cup winner, potentially moving to Liverpool this summer. Is he the kind of player you think Liverpool need to start to rebuild their midfield?

DH: I don’t think it would be a bad start! MacAllister was brilliant at the World Cup. A great team player. At Brighton he has done wonderful things and I think Liverpool need to be talking about players who lead teams, someone who makes other players better and I don’t think they have enough of those types of players at the moment. Van Dijk used to do it but he’s got a few issues himself. If they could get that done, I think it would be brilliant news for Liverpool fans because once you sign him, it gives you a better chance and opportunities to sign other players as well.

I like Rice, I said a few weeks ago he’s a player that would help Liverpool tremendously, but £100 million is a lot of money. It depends how much money they have because MacAllister won’t be cheap either.

£100 million is a lot of money for Declan Rice

BGS: Martin Keown suggested that if the supposed fee for Declan Rice is going to be close to £100 million, then that isn't necessarily where Liverpool or Arsenal might be best shopping or spending their money this summer. What do you think?

DH: It depends how much money they’ve got! Liverpool probably need to spend nearly £250 million in the summer. If he costs £100 million, plus wages, that’s probably close to half the budget on one player. So it depends how many players they want to bring in because I suspect they need a defender as well, and two or three midfielders. Then you see which other areas they want to strengthen. I like Rice, I said a few weeks ago he’s a player that would help Liverpool tremendously, but £100 million is a lot of money. It depends how much money they have because MacAllister won’t be cheap either. If you need three, four, five players, to spend half the budget on one player obviously limits your options for the other players you want to bring in. I tend to agree with Martin on his point, if he costs £100 million plus, or close to it, it is probably not a player which Arsenal or Liverpool can afford.

Last summer I didn’t understand why Phillips would go to Manchester City with the players they’ve got there. For me he's a holding midfielder and he plays as a more defensive option, City of course have Rodri there who is one of the best in the business so I didn’t really see why he would go there. He’s probably got to join another club because he will want to go to the Euros and if he stays at City I don’t think he will.

Manchester City’s rumoured departures: Laporte, Gudogan, Silva and Phillips

BGS: Laporte has supposedly told his agent to find him a new club. It feels like he's only really played this year when Pep has looked to rotate the team and comes in every four or five games, plays and then he's out for another four or five games. What do you expect to happen there? And how hard should City be fighting to keep hold of him?

DH: If you stick with the same team as Guardiola has done in the last four or five months, then the people who are not playing are not happy, because everyone wants to play. I think they would like to keep Laporte because he’s an excellent defender, but if he’s not getting opportunities then he wants to move on. City will probably try to keep him, but if a player wants to move it’s very hard to keep them at the club. I think there’s a good chance that he’ll leave Manchester City in the summer and I’m sure there’ll be a lot of takers. He’s proven he can play in the Premier League and be an influential player.

BGS: A couple of other Man City players rumoured to potentially be leaving are Gundogan and Bernardo Silva. Do you think we might be seeing the end of their Man City careers in the next month?

DH: What I’ve heard in Germany is that Gundogan wants to stay another season, he’s been a brilliant player for Manchester City so I can see Gundogan staying. Bernado Silva depends on what he wants to do. He’s a player who is in the starting eleven at the moment, he’s a very influential player with a lot of important goals and assists. It’s probably down to the players, if they want to stay then they will stay. But there’s also players who are not in the starting team. What happens with Foden or Kalvin Phillips?

Kalvin Phillips has hardly featured, he’s only played just over 100 minutes in the league all season, so I think he’ll be off in the summer. There’ll be some fluctuation in the squad which is normal. You need that as well, to change personnel at times to get competition for places again. At the moment, they haven’t really got that because the team pretty much picks itself. But in the case of Bernado Silva and Gundogan I expect them to stay for at least another season.

BGS: On Kalvin Phillips you mentioned that you think he's probably going to leave. He wouldn't be the first City player to not make the impact they hoped in their first season, but maybe potentially do so in the second or do you think that's not the case here with him?

DH: If you look at someone like Grealish, at least he played some games last year and he contributed. At a club like this it’s different to Villa or Leeds, it takes time to adapt. In the case of Phillips he’s hardly featured, only 103 minutes all season in the League! If you don’t play at all it’s very hard to see where that step up, such as we saw from Mahrez and Grealish.

If he were to play more next season, he’s got to replace somebody, and who is he going to replace? I think they brought him in to see whether they can use him, and I think it was a bad move for the player.

Liverpool’s next few games..

BGS: Liverpool have had a huge turnaround in form, six Premier League wins on the bounce, what do you think has changed in the recent period? What are they doing differently to when they were struggling?

DH: There’s a change in fortune for sure. I think there were a couple of games where they were a bit fortunate, where things went their way which wasn’t the case before. The Spurs game it looked like they threw it away but then scored the very late winner. They have won a lot of games by one goal, which shows you that they’re not as dominant as they were. But when they were peaking, maybe two or three seasons ago, they were winning games by one goal and usually that’s a sign of good teams because a lot of times there isn't much in the game. Once they got ahead they seemed to stay ahead in most games and that’s what they’ve done recently. It’s a remarkable turnaround and I didn’t see it coming. They seem to have belief in the camp again that there is a chance to finish in the Top four and really put the pressure on Manchester United.

BGS: What do you think will happen now? Three games to go, they go away to Leicester, they have Villa at Anfield and Southampton away, who presumably will be relegated by the final day.

DH: I think what has to be mentioned in Liverpool’s return to form is the comebacks of Jota and Diaz. They have made a big difference because you can see they’ve got goals in them again. These two players I think made a big difference, with injured players coming back in and getting that belief back, and that togetherness to be able to put the pressure on Man United.

When you've got the good players back it gives everybody more confidence. All of a sudden you defend better when you've got these players in the team because even if you concede you know you can score so you’re still in the game. Can they get nine points? Yeah, of course they can, they won six in a row, now why can’t they win the next three?

I think Leicester will be a tough game because they've got their backs to the wall. Villa we know are flying high. And then you play Southampton, who are probably relegated by the time they play them. Sometimes it can be a bit of a disadvantage, because some teams perform better when the pressure’s on, some teams perform better when the pressure is off. You’re guessing what you’ll get from Southampton, but you'll have a lot of players there who want to put themselves in the shop window for the summer and they might think “if I have a good game against Liverpool, maybe there's an opportunity to help me with a move in the summer”. As for United's run-in, they need nine points from four games to be guaranteed the top four, but the way they're going at the moment I can see them dropping points. I think if Liverpool get nine points, they've got a hell of a chance. United won’t find it easy. Chelsea is a tough game. Bournemouth are going well in the last two months, so are Fulham. I think if Liverpool get nine points then they will get into the Champions League along with Newcastle.

Didi’s most impressive Newcastle players

BGS: On to Newcastle… which player have you been most impressed coming into the club: in recent times?

DH: It’s very hard to say and to pick one. I think the goalkeeper, Pope, has been excellent, Botman has been excellent, Guimaraes has been great and Joelinton has been tremendous. Almiron, who was so good in the first half of the season, has hardly featured because the other players are playing so well. Callum Wilson too. I could name five or six, it’s very hard to pick just one. Also Fabian Schar at the back, even though he scored an own goal at the weekend. It’s a well oiled machine at the moment. The one we probably see a lot more will be Isak who went to Dortmund when he was 17 years old, probably a bit too early for him. Now he has shown, in glimpses, what he’s capable of. He’s had his injury and he’s back scoring goals and creating chances which is great. I think next year we’ll see an even better player. Isak is the one who will lead the forward line next season.

BGS: What do you think about Saint-Maximin? He’s had injuries but he’s not starting now. Do you think he's a player who might move on or just needs to get an injury free preseason under his belt and then he can get back to the level we’ve seen before?

DH: I don’t think it’ll be easy for Saint-Maximin. When you want to improve your team you bring in better players and then some players have to go on the bench and he has had his injury problems. I think he is a great player to have off the bench and if they are playing Champions League football next season, to have the opportunity to play a season of Champions League football at St James’ Park is too good to turn down so he may very well want to stay for that. I hope he does stay because he’ll have the chance to measure himself against the best and the atmosphere will be electric. You need to have good players off the bench as well, I think we see that time and time again when they bring players on who can make a difference and I think he’s one of them, so I hope for both parties he stays.

BGS: You mentioned bringing in new players and Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams has been heavily linked to a couple of Premier League clubs, Aston Villa, and particularly Newcastle. Is that an example of Newcastle looking to bring in another level of player?

DH: Absolutely. If you bring in a player and you want him to compete for the first XI, everyone will have the same chance, even though the players who played this season probably have a bit of credit in the bank. But Nico’s the type of player they want. Probably not that high profile but that’s where they have done tremendous business. If you look at Guimaraes and Botman, to bring them in for reasonable money was brilliant business for Newcastle, and they’ll probably do the same this season.

BGS: Newcastle’s next game is a trip to Leeds who are in a precarious situation. Sam Allardyce has gone in there and they at least gave Man City a little bit of a fright at the end of the game last weekend. What do you expect from Leeds v Newcastle this weekend?

DH: I know the way Big Sam sets up his teams and the way he wants to play, he might be happy with a draw because the final two games (West Ham away and Spurs at home) will, on paper, be a little easier. They probably need four or five, maybe even six points out of their remaining three games. With the remaining games Newcastle have, a point here won’t be the worst result for them – much as they’ll be favourites to win the game.

BGS: Southampton are probably down, who do you think the other two will be?

DH: I don’t think Forest aren’t out of it yet, even with their win against Southampton. They are three points ahead of Leicester and Leeds, but I think Forest will go down. Forest have tough games, the last three are against Chelsea, Arsenal and a trip to Crystal Palace. It’s hard to call. Allardyce nearly always seems finds a way to get results, even at the Etihad at the end they almost snuck a result which will give them hope. So I’d probably say Leicester and Forest to go down with Southampton.

It’s been a disappointing season for Bayern Munich

BGS: Bayern Munich. How do you assess their season? Do you expect them to go on to win the title now? And how disappointing was their Champions League exit when overview of their season?

DH: It’s been a very disappointing season. It was all going well up until the World Cup then Neuer got injured skiing, Hernandez ruptured his cruciate in the World Cup and it fell apart afterwards. The manager had to go. They did well against Paris St Germain - they did excellently in both games.

Then the way they went out against Manchester City, I felt, even though people thought it was a close game, City played with the handbrake on. City had one or two gears left and were in a different league in those two games.

Will they win the Bundesliga? I’m not too sure, they had two very disappointing performances against Berlin and Bremen, they’ve got Leipzig to play in 10 days time and that’ll be a tough game because Leipzig are playing really well and they’re back in the Champions League places. I expect Dortmund to win all three games, if they do I think they win the league and Bayern could be trophyless for the first time in a long, long time.

If that is the case it’ll be a very disappointing season. The expectations are higher than what they’ve done this season and so far the manager has had very little impact. That’s my biggest worry now moving forward. Is he going to get the best out of the team? There’ll be changes of course, but for now things haven’t really clicked yet.

BGS: You mentioned issues at Munich, the supposed unrest between Mane and Sane, what have you made of that? And do you think more was made of that than it was?

DH: No, I don't think more was made of it because if you punch a player, a teammate, in the face, there should be sanctions. What we hear out of the Bayern Munich camp is that Mane’s time at the club will be over in the summer. There may be interest from Premier League teams and he may be back, but I think his time at Bayern Munich will come to an end in three or four weeks-time. He would have lost the respect from his teammates because as a player you have to earn the respect of your teammates because you’ve got to support each other to be successful. You need everybody pulling in the same direction. I think he’s had his chance and I don’t think he’s taken it. With an incident such as what happened with Sane, I think the last few people in the camp who supported him will have stopped supporting him. I think he’ll leave Bayern this summer.

BGS: And finally, the Jude Bellingham saga goes on. There was some feeling that his celebration after his goals at the weekend, were almost implying that maybe not to listen to the noise and pointing at the pitch as if he might be staying. Can we read anything into that?

DH: I think there is a chance and for him I think it would be best. I said a few weeks ago that he isn’t the most disciplined and I think he’s got to bring a lot of things into his game to play for a big club.

If he goes to City or Real Madrid, he won’t get away with what he’s doing with Dortmund at the minute. At Dortmund he’s got pretty much free reign to do as he wants and gets away with it because he contributes, he scores goals, he creates goals, he sets goals up. He won’t be able to do that at Madrid or Manchester City. I think for him, for his development, it would be best to stay one more season at Dortmund and then move on, move wherever he wants. I saw the celebration and it seemed to imply that there’s a chance he will stay. I think there is a chance because the longer it goes on, and there’s no finalising of a deal with anyone, it gives Dortmund more of a chance to keep him. If Dortmund are to win the League this season, he’ll be part of an invincible team and the people of Dortmund will never forget that. To then get the chance to play in the Champions League next season as Bundesliga winners will be fantastic. They were unfortunate to get knocked out by Chelsea, and I think there is a chance to stay - I hope he does.
